Mrs Peacey wins a National Excellence in Teaching Award

Kerry Peacey was recognised at the National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) where she was awarded with the Apple Teacher of the Year award (Secondary School) and Mentor Teacher award.

As Year 7 Case Manager and Support Teacher for Inclusive Education, Kerry collaborates closely with teachers, parents, and specialists to provide tailored interventions that foster academic and personal growth.

With a deep commitment to equity and justice, she works to build resilience, a growth mindset, and independence in her students.

“Winning the award means a lot to me as I was nominated by a Year 7 parent," Kerry said.

"To be acknowledged in this way is very humbling.

“I like to work in the wings so being drawn out into the spotlight put me well out of my comfort zone, but when I reflect on it I am very proud that my 44 years of service working with secondary students and their families is culminating in this recognition.”

There are six categories, and all winners are eligible for an additional award for recognition as Mentor Teacher.

Kerry was the only recipient on the night to achieve this, acknowledging her commitment to inclusive education.

“The Mentor Award was an overwhelming surprise on the night," Kerry adds.

"For me, it honours the heart of what I do forming partnerships with students, their families, teachers, and external support givers and is as much their award as mine.”

Principal Britt Gurnett Principal said, “Kerry is an invaluable part of our school community".

“Her work in the Learning Enhancement department has not only enriched the lives of our students, but she has worked to build the capacity of our teachers to meet the needs of all learners,” she said.

"Thank you also to the St John Fisher College family who anonymously nominated Kerry, leading to a rigorous selection process which involved a written response from Kerry and her referees, and finally an interview with the judging panel.

"Kerry’s nomination was a wonderful way to show gratitude for the commitment to ensuring our students have access to an inclusive and purposeful education.”
